Marta Karolyi Retires After 54 Years on the Floor….

Marta Karoly retires after 51 yearsThe Final Five with Marta after the final results were announced.

Did anyone else feel emotional after watching Marta lead the 2016 Final Five team  to the gold medal? “54 years of watching and listening and training and laughing with kids.” This is what Bela says makes Marta Karolyi the greatest woman of all time in the sport of gymnastics. Although Marta has only one biological daughter, Andrea Wise, who’s actually the teams nutritionist, she has had 1000s of daughters through the gymnastics bloodline, including 28 Olympians! Gymnastics wouldn’t be what it is today without her passion and love for the sport. Even Bela wouldn’t be who he is without the greatness of his woman. Mary Lou Retton, Marta and Bela’s first Olympian since moving to the states in 1981 from Romania due to political issues, says “Poor little Bela would’ve been a lost puppy without Marta. She was always the organizer and brains while Bela was the motivator.”

Marta and Bela Karolyi

Marta has been the national-team coordinator for 16 years. She carries with her a certain force and presence that makes gymnasts desire to respect and please her. After all, Simone Biles, the best gymnast that ever existed, claimed Marta as the ‘Gymnastics God’. She knows what needs to be done to win. She’s developed the perfect system over so many years of experience. Her philosophy, “Every single thing we do will come from what we do from this moment.” She gets it! To be out best we need to be fully present in each moment.

We will be sad to see Marta retire from gymnastics this year, but we are all hoping she won’t ever fully retire. I mean, it’s been her entire world, and the training camp is still going to be on the Karolyi’s ranch, where she and Bela live, in Huntsville, Texas. The Ranch is huge and the two could easily hide out from all of us obsessed fans on their beautiful 2,000 acres, which includes tons of animals. Bela is a huge animal lover. Check out these peacocks he tends to along with chickens, horses, and more! Maybe Marta will find a new hobby in helping Bela. Haha! The farm has always been Bela’s gig once he retired back in the 90s, but you just never know what new inspirations Marta may find.

Peacocks at Karolyi's Ranch

No matter what Marta chooses to do as life goes on, she will always be a legend in our books. Her name will forever be embedded in the sport. In every club, event, skill, and gymnast, there will always be a piece of Marta. Her blood flows through the sport of gymnastics like a wild river chasing the sea. Marta, you ARE the Gymnastics God. What a beautiful kindling you’ve established for all of the fire in the future of gymnastics. Gymnastics is finally getting the attention it deserves. We will be seeing a lot more amazing gymnastics in the future and we will continue to be marveled again and again, thanks to the torch Marta has lit!

Cheerleaders

1. How old were you when you started dance?

I was 5 years old when I started tumbling classes and cheered for a competitive team, but I started dance when I was 6.

2. How did you get involved in dance?

I asked my parents for about 2 years to enroll me in dance. Dance was always something I wanted to do more then anything. I would watch dance shows on television and youtube and try to copy everything I saw. Finally after begging for 2 years, I finished my last cheer season and started dance. I was immediately asked to join their competition team. A few weeks later I went tom my first competition and won beating out 50 competitors! We went to Nationals 3 months later, which was only my 2nd time to compete and I placed 4th place overall. I was hooked from the start! This year I competed in 10 regional competitions winning more then half and never scoring under 3rd place. I am also currently holding 4 titles, and I won Nationals this year!

sibling love14. Do you have siblings?

I have a brother who is 12. His name is Atkins. He teaches me a lot, although I hate admitting that! My mom says one day I am going to be so glad I have a brother because he will always protect me and make me tough. I think I am already pretty tough though!

15. What is your favorite movie?

I really don’t have a favorite movie as weird as that sounds. I don’t watch a lot of t.v. unless it’s Dance Moms or So You Think You Can Dance. I can’t sit still long enough for an entire movie with my dancing feet!

2016 Olympics Women’s Gymnastics Team- (Plus NBC Schedule)

Meet “The Next 5” gymnasts …

Rio 2016 Foxy's Leotards

Okay, so these may not be the next five gymnasts who are about to step onto the podium this week at the Olympic Games in Rio to rock the house down, but they are Foxy’s gymnasts and they are awesome too……

Here are the next 5 gymnasts on the Women’s Gymnastics Team for this years 2016 Olympic Games in Rio!

Rio 2016 Woman's Gymnastics Team

About the team! (From left to right)

Laurie Hernandez- 16 years old (the youngest on the team). Has been homeschooled since third grade. Her nickname is “Baby Shakira” since she is latin and knows how to shake it! Her dance routine is floor is so fun. She has a certain spark when she performs. Laurie is very consistent and clean and is a great asset for the girls gymnastics team. She trains in New Jersey at Gymland.

Aly Raisman- 22 years old (the oldest on the team). Being the oldest on the team gave her the name “Grandma” by her teammates. Aly was on the 2012 Olympic team, earning Olympic Team Gold along with her teammates, the Fierce Five. You may have also seen her on Dancing with the Stars. She’s down to Earth and a people person. She trains in Massachusetts at Brestyan’s.

Simone Biles- 19 years old and only 4’8″ tall, but with her larger then life personality you’d never know! She is claimed the most “decorated gymnasts ever lived” by many. She has won the last 3 World All Around Titles. Simone best events are beam and floor. She has a way of moving that makes it seem effortless, as if she’s walking through air. She trains in World Champion Center in Texas.

Since then she has taken a 2 year break to make a movie, The Gabby Douglas Story; has a reality show, Douglas Family Gold; has her own emojis; and even just came out with her own Barbie doll! Gabby came back to gymnastics and for the past 2 years has been training like an animal to be in her 2nd Olympic games. In my opinion, she’s one of the coolest chicks ever!!! Gabby is originally from Virginia Beach but now trains in Ohio at Buckeye Gymnastics.

Madison Kocian- 19 years old. Madison started gymnastics at the age of 6, in 2003. She trains up to 7 hours a day at the gym! She has been a U.S. National Team Member on and off since 2009. Her bars are the strongest on the team. She trains in Texas at World Olympics Gymnastics Academy.

Yoga for Gymnasts but not only for gymnasts

Yoga for Gymnasts book

Yoga is an ancient practice that has been around for ages, more then likely, since the beginning of time. Yoga unifies mind, body, and breath making it the ultimate practice for overall health and well being.

With consistent yoga practice, even if only as little as 5 minutes a day, you will notice an increase in your focus, concentration, confidence, strength, flexibility, mental and physical balance, and more. The benefits of the practice are exponential and the effects are felt long after you roll up your mat.

Yoga for Gymnasts is a book for most ages. If you are interested in learning the basics of yoga, and want to be able to create for yourself a home practice, then this is the book for you. Whether you are a coach who wants to add some of these proven techniques to your gymnasts practices, or a parent who wants to learn yoga along their child or athlete, then this is the book for you!

dancer posebow posereverse warrior

I’m Jill Fox, co/owner of Foxy’s Leotards. I started gymnastics at age 6 and grew up a competitive Level 10 gymnast, and I have been involved with gymnastics ever since. I started practicing yoga regularly in my late 20s to keep some of my muscle and flexibility from gymnastics. What I discovered was so much more then I ever could’ve imagined. Yoga is so much more than physical exercise. Yoga is inner work which transforms us from the inside out.

Some of the changes I began to notice from practicing a consistent yoga practice were: less pain in my body from the residual effects of gymnastics, more patience and acceptance for myself and others, the ability to handle stressful situations better, my focus and concentration has improved, and I have more overall awareness. I noticed my mind becoming much more calm. I was able to start controlling my mind rather then the mind always controlling me. Through yoga I have become more present, alive, and appreciative for life!

I wanted to learn even more about yoga and share its’ “secret” with the world, so in 2009, I traveled from Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Santa Cruz, California and took my 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training, with Rolf Gates. Four years later I moved back to California. I’ve been teaching for 9 years now and have taught at yoga studios, drug rehab centers, colleges, schools, corporate offices, and more. My favorite place to teach yoga though is to my gymnasts I coach at Junebug’s Gym.

body mind soulI realized I had been practicing a form of yoga all my life. In gymnastics, we learn many of the same principles: discipline, focus, concentration, and even many of the same poses found in yoga, but it misses that certain link that yoga teaches us. Gymnastics, I remember, was always, “go, go, go. Push, push, push.” Yoga slows the mind way down and brings us to a clearer, sharper state. It is still a very physical and challenging practice, but our mental muscle becomes the key focus and is strengthened. From that space we begin to transform outward. If I would have had the tools and techniques that I’ve learned from yoga, as a gymnast, I know I would have gone a lot further.
